Properties
Phosphorus trichloride is a colorless transparent fuming liquid. It is soluble in ethyl ether, benzene, carbon disulfide and carbon tetrachloride. Phosphorus trichloride fumes with a pungent and irritating odor in moist air. It decomposes exothermically in water and generates gaseous HCl. It is toxic and highly corrosive.

Applications
Phosphorus trichloride is mainly used to produce organic phosphorus pesticides, such as trichlorfon (dipterex), methamidophos, acephate, and EBP (Kitazine), etc.. It is used to produce sulfadiazine (SD) and sulfamethoxydiazine (SMD) in the pharmaceutical industry, and used as a condensation agent for naphthol in the dye industry.
